For years Surfers and Hot Rodders have been looked down upon as lazy people on the fringe of society. Many individuals of this group are locals from beach towns and lower economic stature. For that reason, as much as any other, these groups are resented by outsiders. Particularly, from those who are well to do and venture into, or try and invade those neighborhoods, to surf and cruise as recreation, rather than living the lifestyle. Because of this, some locals have formed loose gangs, which surf a certain break or cruise a certain strip and fiercely protect their territory from outsiders. It’s not intended as a criminal front in any way, it’s just part of the lifestyle.
